Trinidad & Tobago

Jan 21-30, 2025

10 days | Trinidad & Tobago | Birding

Our travellers always enjoy the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. In fact, those who go as self-described “non-birders” usually return as converts! And it’s easy to understand why. The bird life here is astonishingly varied and visible, making for an excellent and relaxed introduction to birds of (and birding in) the New World Tropics. We could observe over 200 bird species during this trip!

We begin our adventure on Trinidad, where the world-renowned Asa Wright Nature Centre will be our base. Located in an idyllic forest setting, it simply teems with birds and you might see 20-30 bird species before breakfast. During our stay on Trinidad, we’ll observe the Scarlet Ibis at their famous evening roost at Caroni Swamp, see the highly unusual Oilbird, journey from the lowlands to the mountains in search of the gaudy Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, and listen for the intriguing “bonk” of the Bearded Bellbird ringing through the rainforest. A two-night stay on the northeast coast situates us in the endemic Trinidad Piping Guan’s remaining stronghold.

We will then fly to Tobago, the smaller of the two islands with its own special attractions. In addition to walking in the world’s very first rainforest reserve, there will be excellent swimming and snorkelling in the aquamarine waters, and a boat trip to the seabird island of Little Tobago where we’ll watch striking Red-billed Tropicbirds fly along the cliff faces and Brown Boobies skim the water’s surface.

"Seeing over 200 species of birds in 10 days was amazing. I'd been to Trinidad in the past, before I got into serious bird watching, so I would say that I added over 150 species to my life list." - Dan Shire
"I was there to Bird. The information given, the quality of the guides and the tour company, site access and coverage were all excellent." - Janis Grant
"Caroline is very knowledgeable and was generous giving information. She had a cheerful disposition and is good at organizing people. She is also a lot of fun as a travelling companion and her participation in the group was one of the reasons I was happy to sign up." - Frances Baker
