Hotel Bougainvillea is our “go to” lodge when we’re staying in San José. Why do our travellers simply love this place? It was a combination of features there that provide great benefits:

In a Quieter Nook

Located some seven kilometres from the city centre, Hotel Bougainvillea is in the Santo Tomas suburb nestled in the hills, a sufficient distance from the busier historic core. It’s quieter and one immediately feels one is in something of a retreat.

The Views

From the right vantage at the front of the lodge, you can see down towards the bottom of the Central Valley where San José proper lies and across to the valley’s south rim. It’s possible to have this view in from the rooms rightly designated ‘mountain view’ for that inspirational view. On the other hand, we also have access to the ‘garden view’ rooms, which have their own benefit…

The Gardens

The hotel has its own 10-acre botanical gardens with a variety of tropical plants interesting in and of themselves, and collectively creating a lush atmosphere. Among the many plants represented are seven colours of the namesake plant Bougainvillea.

The hotel received an award for best garden in Costa Rica by the country’s National Gardening Association!

The Bird Life

Inviting as it is for human visitors, the lush atmosphere is also a haven for a variety of wonderful Costa Rican birds! In fact, this is the place where many of our first-time travellers to Costa Rica will see their “firsts” of many different birds. The proximity of birds also makes for fantastic photographic opportunities.
