Lee Groat is a Professor in UBC’s Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences department. Since 2012 Prof. Groat has led an annual 17-day course in Iceland for senior undergraduates covering the geology, climate, flora, fauna, and human settlement of Iceland, and factors that are impacting them today. Lee is a keen student of the Iceland sagas and is in the process of learning Icelandic. Past travellers have enjoyed stories of his geologic adventures in both Canada and Iceland.
In 2003 Dr. Groat was elected a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America, and in 2009 the new mineral, groatite was named in his honour.
