Perfectly pink Jaipur, lakeside Udaipur, and the dazzling blue of Jodhpur are on our route; there are palaces with mosaic glass, mirrored ceilings, and scalloped windows and bustling markets nestled within the winding, glittering tangle of medieval streets. There is drama too in grand forts perched high on hilltops with commanding views of ancient landscapes. Visit the largest fort in India, a temple with more than a thousand carved pillars, and a magnificent but littleknown stepwell. But Rajasthan is more than the sum of its spectacular monuments; villages hold our attention for several days. Stay in a welcoming ‘Best-Exotic-Marigold-style’ hotel and in an elegant family-owned home which is a 300-year-old palace. Enjoy rummaging in ramshackle shops, learn to cook a meal, and meet village weavers.

Sure to be a highlight is your visit to the Pushkar Camel Festival, a spectacle on an epic scale, amidst mystics and musicians against a soundtrack of prayers and devotional songs. This is a wonderful and enriching way to experience the many layers of this storied land.
