Hawaii with UBC Astrophysicist Jaymie Matthews

Situation update from our Hawaii partners (13 July, 2018)
At this time, the only areas experiencing contiguous effects of Kilauea's activity are those within the current eruption zone. No areas that the group will be visiting on the scheduled activity itineraries are within any of the lava inundation zones, and are not considered to be at risk of Kilauea's eruption in any way. Your safety is our primary concern. We are regularly monitoring the situation on the ground and will provide updates as we receive them. For complete details, please contact Amy in the Worldwide Quest office.

Hawaii is an astronomer's dream. Easily accessible peaks plus clean air mean an ideal location for stargazing. Join top UBC astrophysicist Jaymie Matthews for a very special visit to the Big Island. Enjoy special access visits to leading observatories and observe the night skies with professional telescopes. Hike the slopes of Hualalai, travel to the summit of Mauna Kea, watch for basking sea turtles, and explore Hawaii Volcano National Park with an expert guide. Stay in two of the diverse environments on the Big Island; a seaside resort in Kona and a historic Hawaii Inn in the community of Volcano. A not-to-be-missed journey of discovery!

Invitation from Jaymie Matthews:

"When you close your eyes and picture Hawaii, what do you see? I see things different than most. First, snow. Snow on the peak of the tallest volcano on Earth. Then a spectacular sunset from that summit. Turning around, I see the shadow of the peak on which I stand, cast not on the ocean but on the atmosphere itself. Then stars. Stars that seem so close that you could touch them. Stars whose light I share with giant telescopes - structures and a setting that seems more Hollywood science fiction than Hawaiian vacation. From sky summit, I shift underground to a lava tube, emerging to find a volcanic crater the Moon would envy. Then a cloud forest, where clouds float at the trees' canopy and underneath is a mystical misty world of exotic life. Adding life to my reverie is a strong cup of Kona coffee, more invigorating when your café is the Mountain Thunder plantation. I picture beaches too, but my favourite is black sand, shared with sea turtles. Another sunset and the stars return.

That's my Hawaii. I'd like to make it yours. Join me on The Big Island for a week that spans billions of years of cosmic time, taking you from sea to sky, from Hawaiian history to global future. After this, when you close your eyes to picture Hawaii, you'll see not a big island but a bigger world."
