Southern Morocco: Your Way

14 days | Morocco | Private Journeys
This is the fabled land of Berbers, of shifting sands and exotic colours, of grand palaces and nomadic tents. Sitting on the edge of the great Sahara, with both an Atlantic and Mediterranean seaboard, and the highest mountains in North Africa, Morocco has a variety of scenery and climate unrivalled by other Mediterranean countries. Between the end of Roman rule in AD253 and the French take-over in 1912, Morocco was able to develop as a fiercely independent nation with a unique and powerful culture of its own. Few Muslim countries today can offer such a flavour of Islam with so few accompanying restrictions on visitors. So close to the West, Morocco has a fine understanding and tolerance of our ways.
Morocco has wilderness at its core, from the rugged peaks of the Atlas Mountains, to the empty majesty of the Western Sahara Desert. As you make your way across the south of the country, you’ll travel by Toyota 4X4 Land Cruiser with your English-speaking Berber guide. It’s the only way to access some of the desert sites and you’ll be visiting in the company of a host who really knows the area. You’ll stay in the best accommodations available, ranging from a night in a comfortable tented camp in the desert to magnificent traditional riads. Along the way, you’ll sample true Moroccan cuisine and enjoy the ambience of a unique region of Morocco.
You’ll begin and end your trip in Marrakesh, the ancient capital of southern Morocco where you’ll explore the fascinating souks, mosques, mausoleums and palaces of the Old City. You’ll be travelling on unpaved piste roads through high mountain passes and wild landscapes dotted with isolated villages and nomads minding their herds of goats. Your Berber guide will accompany you to artisans’ workshops and through the souks and to meet the nomadic people who live here. You’ll visit fortresses clinging to the sides of mountains, ancient walled cities, and Sufi cloisters of immense peace.
What’s included: Accommodation based on selected hotels, breakfast daily, other meals as specified in the final itinerary, sightseeing with qualified English-speaking guide, entrance fees to sites visited with our guide, transportation by private vehicle, unless otherwise indicated, camel trek.
