Bolivia Birds and Wildlife

Oct 14-29, 2026

16 days | Bolivia | Quest Nature Tours

We are thrilled to introduce this exploratory tour to Bolivia, a land-locked mecca for biodiversity astride the Andes. Over 16 days, observe the striking differences in habitats and attendant species as we ascend in altitude and zigzag between the humid eastern slopes and drier western slopes. Bird life is astonishingly varied, including numerous national and regional endemics like Wedge-tailed Hillstars, Bolivian Tapaculos, and Bolivian Warbling-Finches. Herds of Llamas and Alpacas roam about the dry highland slopes, as Andean Condors soar above them in the clear skies.

We begin in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, checking the nearby grasslands and then spending two days at Refugio Los Volcanes in the semi-humid Amazonian foothill forests surrounded by sandstone cliffs. Crossing west to the inter-Andea valleys brings us to the dry, semi-deciduous forests near Comarapa. This is a great place for parrots, including endemic (and endangered) Red-fronted Macaws. The nearby humid Siberia Forest serves as a stark contrast. A five-night stay in the vast Cochabamba region allows for ample time to visit the wet and dry slopes and their different forests, Polylepsis woodlands, and puna grasslands. This is prime territory for endemics. Following an internal flight, we arrive in the high-altitude La Paz region where the air is noticeably thinner. Here, we have a day trip to iconic Lake Titicaca (home of an endemic grebe) amidst the altiplano as well as a venture to 4700 metres at La Cumbre and its surrounding puna grasslands and pincushion bogs.

Tour leader Josh Vandermeulen is well-versed in Andean exploration at all altitudes. He and an expert Bolivian naturalist guide serve as your hosts on this discovery of a region that has flown under the radar for far too long.

To extend your time in Bolivia, consider our optional extension to the Apolo region in search of recently discovered Inti Tanagers and Palkachupa Cotingas.
