Birthplace of the classic safari, Kenya is home to some of the most famous reserves in Africa and in the world. Kenya is rightfully esteemed so, for it holds Africa’s ‘Big Five' – elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard – in addition to so much more. Kenya’s bird life is notable and understandably so, for it consists of a huge and exquisite assortment of gaudy species in addition to many more subtly marked and reclusive ones. On this exclusive tour with David Lindo – The Urban Birder® – we delight in observing Kenya’s wonderful birds in addition to its other signature big mammals with special access to locations where we can enjoy a diverse, fulfilling, and uniquely contemplative experience of East Africa’s natural habitats.
We begin our experience with David in Nairobi where we explore some of the city’s perhaps surprisingly ample green spaces. Here we have a fantastic opportunity to acquaint ourselves with the more cosmopolitan representatives of East African bird life while engaging in the delightful and fulfilling practice of urban birding. After our day in the city, we head in earnest into the wilder habitats of Kenya, charting a course southwest to the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy. This is both a project and a place – the first ever community-owned and directed wildlife conservancy in the Maasai Mara, consisting of 5000 acres of protected lands where the Maasai continue their age-old pastoral activities and co-exist with the region’s famed large mammals. Here we will enjoy gentle walks with a chance to connect intimately with these habitats primeval and their wildlife. We’ll also enjoy a day of game drives in nearby Mara before exploring the Loita Hills, home to another community project set in forested habitats. These habitats are usually bypassed on the standard East Africa safaris that remain in open savanna habitats, and we’ll have the opportunity to observe birds that prefer more extensively wooded country. Finally, we explore the Rift Valley lakes region, best-known for its flamingos and the bustle of bird life more generally – a fitting last touch to our enjoyable discoveries in this rich region.
Your participation helps to support the continuity of the Nashulai Maasai Conservancy. Join David Lindo for what should be a most memorable experience of East Africa’s wonderful bird life and biodiversity.
