Borneo: Biodiversity & Orangutans...and Bats!

Quest's Director Justin Peter recently hosted a webinar about his travels in Borneo. Click here to watch (41 mins.)!

Borneo is one of the most exciting destinations on earth for the traveller, and its northern Sabah province contains among the world’s last great wild places. On this tour we’ll delve deep into some of the oldest forests on the planet, and our sense of proportion may be dramatically reset as we are confronted with trees of immense size!

Within these forests lies a tremendous diversity of life, much of it endemic to this island. A stunning array of exotic birds, including pheasants and parakeets, hornbills and broadbills, cuckoos and kingfishers may be found along with a diversity of compelling reptiles and amphibians. The forests are also host to a surprising diversity of primates such as the pot-bellied and comic-looking Proboscis Monkey, Pig-tailed Macaque, and Bornean Gibbon and one of the most endearing animals on earth: the Bornean Orangutan.

Borneo’s fauna also notably includes several species that “fly” (glide, really) across forest canopy gaps including the Flying Lizard, Colugo (Flying Lemur) and the flying frogs…that we’ll hope to see in action during our walks or drives!

Our outstanding experience will include stays in secluded rainforest lodges, travel by boat through virgin mangrove stands and a visit to the world-famous Gomantong Caves, home to millions of insect-eating bats and a source of great fascination. Our time ‘in the field’ will be complemented by evening presentations that give us insight into Borneo’s importance and provide context to our discoveries.

Join our distinguished alumnus Dan Riskin and a group of just 14 alumni on this enriching voyage of discovery into a multi-layered and captivating part of the world.
