The Azores: Mystical Islands of the Mid-Atlantic

May 02-09, 2025

8 days | Portugal | alumni UBC Travel Club

This Azores existed in isolation until about 1427 during the Age of Exploration. Though there is disputed evidence of prior human presence — perhaps very temporary — it’s remarkable that this mid-Atlantic archipelago ostensibly remained out of human reach for millennia, slowly being shaped by the awesome geological forces that characterize areas where tectonic plates converge. The islands’ geological story is still very much in process as evidenced by relatively fresh lava flows and craters. Volcanic rocks underlie mineral-rich soil, which was a gift to early Portuguese and French settlers, who grew sugar cane, oranges, and wheat. From there, a distinct set of cultural traditions, including fishing, ceramics, pottery, and embroidery, gradually blossomed over the centuries and forged a distinct Azorean way of life. Geographic isolation has enabled speciation and the evolving of endemic species and subspecies of plants and animals. In the surrounding waters, you can observe transient and resident whales, including Sperm Whales and perhaps Blue Whales, the largest animals to ever live.

Our explorations cover three islands. On São Miguel, get a first taste of the rugged volcanic landscapes and shorelines that define the Azores; later, explore woodlands comprised of plants found nowhere else on Earth. Faial is home to the Capelinhos Volcano, where you have the unique opportunity to partake in a “moon walk” over a lava flow from the 1950s. Neighbouring Pico is wine country with its curious old-growth vines and warm microclimates born from hand-placed volcanic rock. Our time on land is complemented by our time at sea, where we can watch for whales and dolphins during three private boat tours. The timing of this tour coincides with the return of several migratory ‘great whale’ species, so you have a chance of seeing a wide variety of cetaceans.

To add context and further insights throughout the tour, Dr. Andrew Trites is delivering various presentations on marine mammals, much of it based on his UBC research! !
