Sulawesi Birding & Wildlife: Your Way

Part of the vast Indonesian archipelago, Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes) is rightly acclaimed as a place of significant interest to the curious naturalist traveller. For instance, over 500 bird species have been recorded here, including 89 endemics. The interest goes much beyond the numbers, however. The result of a fusion of previously separate land masses into one large island, its wildlife is testament to its geologic past and presents an interesting blend of influences, betraying the island’s proximity both to mainland Southeast Asia and to Australia. This is particularly evident through the eclectic assortment of bird life, including the conspicuous hornbills, bee-eaters and kingfishers, along with a suite of others. Yet despite their resemblance to others in the region, many species are found only in Sulawesi!
