11 days | Sri Lanka | Private Journeys
Sri Lanka is filled with cultural and national treasures, and on this tour you will get to experience its delightful mix of ancient cities, monuments, and colonial architecture – not to mention the palm-fringed beaches, mountainous greenery, and abundant wildlife.
As you make your way from Colombo, along the Dutch Canal, you will learn how to make liquor from a coconut tree, watch for birds, and learn about the craft of tile making. You will get to visit a Dutch Fort, a Hindu Temple, and a Catholic cathedral all in one day. The Elephant Orphanage of Pinnawela will inspire you as you learn how these abandoned elephants were rescued and cared for. In Dambulla, you will explore the sacred city of Anuradhapura, founded in the 3rd century BC and venerated as the Capital City of Buddhism. Onward to Habarana, you will climb the famous Sigiriya rock fortress, and observe the world-renowned frescoes of the “Heavenly Maidens’’ of Sigiriya. In Elkadewa, you will take in the mountain views, relax by the falls, and hike the Simpson Trail. Your last stop before heading back to Colombo is Kandy, the last capital of the Sri Lankan Kings and a World Heritage Site. It is here that you will witness the local people praying to the Tooth God in the Temple of the Tooth, which houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic: a sacred tooth of the Buddha.
