SE Alaska: Bears, Glaciers, Whales & Wilderness

Choose your dates

13 days | USA | Expedition Cruise

Alaska is true wilderness. One-fifth the size of the continental United States, Alaska has the highest coastal mountain range in the world. Over one-half of the world’s glaciers cover these mountains and Alaska is one of only three places in the world where tidewater glaciers exist. Wildlife abounds with whales, bears, moose, and eagles. Heavily forested and with over three million lakes, Alaska is a vast, beautiful and truly wild place. Southeast Alaska (the “Panhandle”) is the jewel in Alaska’s coastal crown. Its coastal climate and abundant wildlife have always encouraged habitation. At first it was the Native Americans – Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian – followed by Russian, British and American fur traders. Today, some 60,000 Alaskans live in five major centres, and are scattered in tiny communities along the 300-mile length of Southeast Alaska. We will explore some of Southeast Alaska’s very special places. The relatively small size of our vessel will allow us to cruise through narrow tidal inlets to bays where towering glaciers calve into the ocean. Seals sleep on icebergs that drift past our hull. Our relaxed and flexible schedule enables us to stop and watch any wildlife we encounter on route. Join us and experience Southeast Alaska as few can ever do!

Ship Information

The S/V Island Roamer is a custom 68-foot ketch that was launched in the early 1980s. The boat’s design, safety and comfort make it particularly well-suited for this trip. It accommodates 14 passengers in 7 private cabins and have 3 heads with hot showers, a large comfortable inside lounge with an extensive natural history library, a well-equipped galley and a large covered seating area on deck with protection in all types of weather. All cabins are of irregular sizes to fit the contours of the boat. Each cabin has accommodation for two people – some cabins with one double bed, most with two single bunks, often an upper and lower style. You will find that you don’t spend much time in your cabin as there is always something to do or see on deck.
The M/V Snow Goose is a 65-foot steel motor-vessel built in Alaska in 1973 as a private yacht. Ideal for research and education programs, she sleeps 12 passengers in 6 private cabins (double occupancy), with 3 heads and two showers. The main deck features a spacious, airy salon, natural history library, galley and dining area. Large windows provide great viewing on all sides with easy access to the deck. The upper bridge deck provides a good vantage point for spotting wildlife and comfortable seating for passengers who wish to get involved with the navigation of the ship. Snow Goose is a US Coast Guard certified passenger vessel.
