Mexico City Arts and Culture

Apr 12-19, 2026

8 days | Mexico | alumni UBC Travel Club

Brimming with breathtaking architecture, captivating artwork, and a culinary scene that is second to none, Mexico City is now experiencing its well-deserved spotlight. At the nexus of ancient civilizations and modern urban life, the city and its close environs showcase artistic expression from the Aztec period to the colonial-era and from the great muralists of the 30s and 40s to contemporary street and graffiti artists.

We’ll delve into the mystical origins of the Teotihuacan pyramids and examine the remains of the Aztec great temple of Tenoctitlán, the centre of the universe now the centre of the city’s main plaza. We’ll visit museums like the splendid Museum of Anthropology with its exceptional collection of Mexican Art and the studio homes of the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. With artists leading our discoveries, we will traverse the historic neighbourhoods districts which come alive with the contemrporary pulse of street art addressing social and political issues through visit imagery that challenges norms and invites dialogue.

The city’s gastronomic landscape is no less artistic, reflecting the rich culinary heritage, creativity, and fusion of flavours. We’ll sample the bustling street food scene in vibrant markets and favourite food stalls and savour the traditional cuisine of moles and antojitos. We’re based for the week in a delightful historic hotel right on the Zócalo, the city’s main square.
