Malta: Neolithic to Now

Aug 30 - Sep 06, 2026

8 days | Malta | alumni UBC Travel Club

Malta has an extraordinary more than 7,000-year history beginning with the arrival of a little-known people from Sicily who became the creators of Malta’s unique Neolithic temples. That history continues with the arrival of traders and invaders across the Mediterranean from the Phoenicians and Romans to the order of maritime warrior monks known as ‘The Knights of Malta’ to both sides in the Second World War.

The Knights built a near-impregnable new city on a rocky peninsula between two harbours. This is Malta’s delightful capital, Valletta, where we stay in single lovely hotel for the week of exploration and discovery. We travel short distances across the island and to nearby Gozo, enjoying the marvellous variety of Maltese cuisine and its incredible range of wines.

The sheer diversity of sites here is sure to astound. There are the Megalithic temples, among the oldest in the world; ancient Roman villas; medieval Mdina; the Baroque splendour of Valletta; and the very modern City Gate designed by Renzo Piano.

Join UBC archaeologist Megan Daniels on this immersive discovery of Malta from the Neolithic to now.
