Kenya Safari with alumni UBC

Oct 01-11, 2025

11 days | Kenya | alumni UBC Travel Club

There’s a good chance you’ll have seen most, if not all, of Africa’s ‘Big Five’ mammals — Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Buffalo, and Elephant — before you reach the legendary plains of Maasai Mara. We have designed this special new tour to culminate in a three-night stay within the Mara at an eco-lodge where many of East Africa’s iconic mammals and birds are often seen on or around the expansive property. Depending on the rains, there might be large congregations of Wildebeest in the area. Early October is typically the time when the herd is at its northern limit in Maasai Mara readying for the southward journey back into the Serengeti as part of the Great Migration.

The tour begins in Kenya’s capital city Nairobi with a two-night stay. Get your bearings on a full-day exploration of Nairobi, with stops at two wildlife centers where elephants and giraffes respectively are rehabilitated and then reintegrated back into the wild. This is a great way to get acquainted with two iconic mammal species before observing them in the wild at Tsavo West National Park, where we have a three-night stay. A two-night stay in Amboseli National Park gives you the rare opportunity to observe some members of the Park’s population of 1000 or so African Elephants.

Through this immersive journey, enjoy regular game drives in pop-top safari vehicles where everyone has their own window seat. Expert local guides know where to go to witness the most memorable wildlife spectacles. UBC’s Sarah Benson-Amram is your accompanying study leader. Having lived and worked in both Maasai Mara and Amboseli, Sarah can draw on her many personal experiences studying Kenya’s mammals, while sharing insights about her current research on wildlife.
