Travis Steffens

Travis Steffens (PhD) is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Guelph. He is a Fellow International of the Explorers Club, a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, a Canadian Geographic Ambassador, and the founding Executive Director of Planet Madagascar, a charity focused on conserving lemurs and improving the lives of people in Madagascar. Since 2005, Travis has led over 70 wildlife and cultural trips to Belize, Botswana, Canada, Costa Rica, Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa, Russia, and Zimbabwe. He brings a passion for wildlife, culture, conservation, and travel to each of his trips.

As a primate researcher and conservationist Travis has an intimate knowledge of wildlife, cultures, and landscapes. The focus of Travis’s expeditionary research is on understanding how lemurs respond to human alterations of forest and how best to conserve them. Travis has participated in 2 Explorers Club flagged expeditions in Madagascar and spends weeks there every year. Travis brings to the trips he hosts over 25 years of personal experience studying wildlife and another decade of directing a conservation charity focussed on creating sustainable forest communities. He loves travelling with others and is keen to share his knowledge of the natural world and the life-changing experience of traveling to places like Madagascar with both first timers and seasoned travelers. Guests have commented: “his knowledge and passion for the animals we observed on this trip was infectious,” and “Travis is a fountain of knowledge and his expertise with everything related to Africa is amazing.” Travelling with Travis is always exciting, and he is happy to share his stories from years of research, guiding tours, and leading expeditions. Find out why Avenue Magazine labelled Travis as the “Next Generation of Adventurer” as you travel with him.
