Angkor Wat is on every intrepid traveller’s ‘must see’ list and for good reason. One of humanity’s greatest architectural achievements, it remains a magnificent and evocative sight. We recommend a good four days in Siem Reap, to even begin to scratch the surface of Khmer architecture. There are vast, millennial stone faces watching you at Angkor, the Bayon Temple and Banteay Srei. And there are many more temples cocooned in the jungle; sites covered by moss and the wandering tendrils of thick vines. There is a grand choice of accommodation from luxury resort to colonial mansions to super chic city. Beyond Angkor, the capital Phnom Penh is vigorous and bustling and further afield, there are Eco lodges on the Mekong and quiet beaches on the Gulf of Thailand. While we usually insist you include Cambodia as an ‘add on’ to Vietnam and Thailand, it’s definitely worthy of an entire trip on its own.
