Puglia Wine Tour

Explore and taste in the ‘heel’ of Italy, one of the most exciting and least explored wine regions of Europe. Puglia offers a treasure trove of wine and food, superb architecture in white-washed villages, and picture-perfect coastal scenery.

Travel across the Itria Valley, a patchwork of vineyards and rolling hills, famous for it’s distinctive ‘trulli’, stone huts with conical roofs thought to have belonged to grape growers of the 1800s. We’ll explore the quaint villages of Alberobello and Locorotonto, stay in the heart of gorgeous Matera amidst the natural caves of tufa limestone and revel in the elegant Baroque city of Lecce.

We’ll be tasting at leading winemakers of Primitivo di Manduria, Salice Salentino, and Castel del Monte and sampling the indigenous grape varieties of Puglia and Basilicata. Full-bodied reds and excellent rosés feature here. Howard Soon’s insights and commentary inform our exclusive tastings.

Cuisine is an important feature of our experience with curated food walks in the markets of Bari, visits to a burrata cheese maker, olive oil producers, and a traditional bread maker and careful attention to wonderful meals.

Your Tour Leader

UBC alumnus Howard Soon is the longest serving winemaker in Canada, creating 37 consecutive vintages and winning countless awards for his winemaking. As the head winemaker at Sandhill from 1997 to 2017, his collaborative relationships with growers and non-interventionist approach have consistently led to award-winning, single vineyard wines. In 2019, Howard was named a member of the Order of Canada (C.M.) for his influence on the wine industry.
