There is something about wild places that calls to us. Even as we live in ever-expanding, ever more comfortably built environments, something draws us into the wild.
While we feel the pull of the wild, rarely do we heed its call. Our tour is an opportunity to explore the geography and history of a uniquely untouched place. This September, amidst the awe-inspiring beauty of Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland, join philosopher and nature advocate Wendy O’Brien to explore your relationship with the wild.
We’ll start each day with a themed discussion, guided by the work of classic and contemporary nature writers. We’ll then head out to explore on foot and by boat. Feel the spray of saltwater as you cruise the fjords of spectacular Western Brook Pond and Bonne Bay. Cross the barrens to the rugged clifftop of Green Gardens, learn from an Indigenous interpreter in the boreal forest, and walk over ancient sea floor on the astonishing Tablelands.
Our base for the week is the lovely Bonne Bay Inn, in the historic seaside village of Woody Point. surrounded by stunning mountain and ocean views.
Dare to explore this beautiful wild setting. Take up the challenge knowing, as Robert MacFarlane has said, that “wild places can kindle new ways of being.” How will Gros Morne inspire you?
Group discussions and short lectures will be based on selections from:
The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd, and selected excerpts of writings by Karen Armstrong, Kit Dobson, David Haskell, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Barry Lopez, Mary Oliver, Anita Sethi, and Henry David Thoreau
