Along The Frankincense Trail: An Oman Exploration

Feb 11-21, 2024

11 days | Oman | alumni UBC Travel Club

The opportunities to travel to little-visited locations are increasingly rare. Oman stands out for its spectacular landscapes of desert, coast, and mountain, its fascinating history, and its stable politics.

Reputed to be the land of the legendary Sinbad, Oman was a hub for commerce by land and by sea before the first century AD trading in copper and frankincense. We’ll follow the Frankincense Trail from Muscat to the Empty Quarter and onward to Dhofar where the frankincense trees grow among the remains of abandoned caravan oases.

We’ll see spectacular UNESCO sites including the immense ruined Bahla Fort, admire the dramatic mountain scenery of Jebel Shams, the ‘Grand Canyon of Oman’, tackle vast expanses of the Arabian Desert, and meet traditional communities in souks and village markets filled with merchants still trading the gold, silver, silks, and spices as they did in the 10th century.

Enjoy unbroken sunshine, luxurious accommodation, and exclusive connections with local scholars on this relaxed exploration of Oman.
