Wild Landscapes and Spring Migration in Western Spain

Extremadura is one of Spain’s true wildlife strongholds — a vast, lightly populated region of open skies and living landscapes, where traditional land use and seasonal rhythms still shape the natural world. Tucked into the southwest of the country along the Portuguese border, it remains one of Spain’s least visited regions despite being comparable in size to Switzerland. In spring, the transformation is dramatic: winter rains give way to green plains, full reservoirs, and hillsides bright with wildflowers. At the same time, birdlife surges into activity as resident species breed and migrants return from Africa, bringing energy and movement to every corner of the landscape.

What sets Extremadura apart is not a single highlight but the sheer variety and continuity of its habitats. Open cereal plains merge seamlessly into ancient dehesa wood‑pastures, rugged sierras rise above river gorges, and wetlands and rice fields punctuate the countryside. Wildlife here is not confined to reserves — it is woven through working farmland, historic towns, Roman ruins, and quiet villages, creating an experience that feels both immersive and authentic.

Our journey begins in the granite peaks and alpine valleys of the Sierra de Gredos, offering a striking introduction to inland Iberia before we move south into Extremadura itself. Over the course of the tour, we experience the drama of Monfragüe National Park, explore quieter reservoirs and steppe‑like plains, and linger in remote valleys rarely encountered by visitors. A visit to the AMUS wildlife rehabilitation centre adds an enriching perspective on the conservation work that underpins the region’s exceptional birdlife.

This tour is designed for those who enjoy travelling slowly and deeply, allowing time for observation, reflection, and surprise. Join us in spring, when Extremadura is at its most alive, and discover one of Iberia’s most rewarding regions through space, season, and a shared sense of exploration.
