Rome & Florence

Oct 30 - Nov 07, 2026

9 days | Italy | alumni UBC Travel Club

Study Leader Justin Newell hosted a webinar, "The Works of Michelangelo".
Watch the video recording here. (70 min. + Q&A)

Walk in the footsteps of Michelangelo, from his arrival in Rome as a brilliant young sculptor creating the moving Pietà at just twenty-four, through his stormy collaboration with Pope Julius II that gave us the Sistine Chapel ceiling, to his architectural triumph in the soaring dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. In Florence, the city that shaped him, we encounter the colossal “David” and works that still embody the spirit of the Renaissance.

This journey offers more than a viewing of masterpieces—it provides a deeper understanding of Michelangelo’s genius and the world in which he worked. Through richly illustrated talks and engaging on-site commentary by art historian Justin Newell and local expert guides, you’ll come to appreciate not only the artistry but also the tensions, influences, and innovations that defined his career. Justin’s presentations bring clarity and context, weaving history, politics, and personal ambition into a vivid portrait of an extraordinary life.

Our focus is Michelangelo, yet we leave space to encounter the brilliance of other Renaissance masters as well. Two centrally located hotels, each chosen for comfort and character, make it easy to explore both Florence and Rome at a relaxed pace. With time set aside for your own discoveries, and expert guidance illuminating the great works, this is an invitation to experience the Renaissance with fresh eyes and deeper insight.
