From the sweeping plains of the Serengeti to the dramatic rise of Mount Kilimanjaro, the country’s natural wonders are both humbling and exhilarating. The spice-scented island of Zanzibar adds a contrasting layer of turquoise waters, historic streets, and relaxed tropical charm. Good to Know

Tanzania is one of Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations, known for its friendly people, dramatic landscapes, and extraordinary wildlife. Safaris typically mean early mornings, dusty roads, and plenty of time outdoors-so pack light, breathable clothing, sun protection, and a sense of adventure. Distances between parks can be long, and small-plane bush flights are common; luggage on these flights is often restricted to soft bags only. The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling, though US dollars are widely accepted in lodges and tourist areas. Tipping is customary on safari and helps support guides, rangers, and camp staff.

Best Time to Visit

The best overall time to visit is June to October, during the long dry season. Wildlife viewing is at its peak-animals gather around water sources, vegetation is thinner, and conditions are ideal for game drives across the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and beyond. The short dry season from January to February is another excellent period, especially for witnessing the calving season in the southern Serengeti, when thousands of wildebeest are born and predators are highly active.

Cuisine

Tanzanian cuisine is warm, hearty, and deeply tied to the country’s coastal, Swahili, and inland traditions. Along the coast and on Zanzibar, the influence of Arab, Indian, and Persian traders comes alive in dishes scented with cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and coconut. Don’t miss pilau and biryani, richly spiced rice dishes that showcase the island’s historic spice heritage. For something sweet, try mandazi-light, coconutty doughnuts.
