Good To Know

Madagascar is vast and travel between regions can be slow. Plan for flights or long drives. Roads can be rugged, especially in the rainy season. French is widely spoken; English less so outside major hotels. Cash is important beyond big towns. The island’s charm lies in its authenticity, remoteness, and biodiversity-ideal for travelers who appreciate adventure and wild, natural beauty.

When to Travel

The ideal time to visit Madagascar is April to November, when the weather is cooler, drier, and perfect for wildlife viewing, hiking, and beach stays.

April-June: Lush landscapes, great for lemurs and waterfalls.

July-September: Best wildlife season, pleasant temperatures, and peak whale watching (especially on Île Sainte-Marie).

October-November: Excellent for baby lemurs and blooming forests.*Avoid January-March, when heavy rains and cyclones affect travel!

Cuisine

Madagascar’s cuisine combines African, French, and Asian influences, built around rice, fresh seafood, and flavorful local produce. Look for: Romazava: National dish of beef, greens, and light broth, Ravitoto: Pork cooked with crushed cassava leaves, Akoho sy voanio: Chicken simmered with coconut milk, Street snacks: Mofo gasy (sweet rice cakes), samosas, and skewers. Coastal specialties: Grilled lobster, prawns, and fish curries.
