Ann De León is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (Treaty 6), where she teaches Spanish, Latin American Studies, Spanish–English Translation, and Aztec History, Language, and Culture. Originally from Mexico City, she is an award-winning educator, having received the Early Teaching Award (2012) and the Community-Service-Learning Teaching Award (2025). She has also partnered with more than 13 local non-profit organizations. Her research focuses on Aztec (Mexica), Mixtec, and Mayan Indigenous pictorial manuscripts (códices or amoxtli), as well as representations of the Aztecs in popular culture. Fun fact: For the past 18 years, she has dressed as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo to celebrate Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos).
