“Pura vida”, meaning “pure life”, is one of the first phrases you will hear after arriving in this peaceful Central American country. Though the expression is used more as a greeting or a reminder of the peaceful lifestyle that pervades, “pure life” is an accurate description of what this rich land is all about. Costa Rica is a poster child for biodiversity as life does indeed seem to burst from even the most unexpected places. Almost 900 bird species have been recorded here. The gem of the Central Highlands is the Arenal Volcano which, when active, creates a spectacular light show in the tropical night. The misty cloud forest high up along the Continental Divide offers some of the most ornamented life forms such as the Resplendent Quetzal – a bird often described as one of the world’s most beautiful. The arid Pacific lowland jungles are a stronghold for the American Crocodile and the endangered Scarlet Macaw. Mantled Howler Monkeys, Central American Spider Monkeys and White-faced Capuchins provide endless fascination and entertainment as they dangle and leap from mossy branches in the remote Pacific rainforests.
