Private Journeys to Cambodia

A Journey into Sacred Temples Quiet Rivers and Gentle Smiles

Scroll Down

Home > Private Journey > Cambodia
Cambodia is one of those destinations that feels both ancient and emerging all at once. Stone temples rise from jungle clearings, monks in saffron robes cross modern streets and the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers shape daily life in subtle quiet ways. The country has endured great hardship yet what travellers often remember most is the warmth of the people, the softness of the light and the sense of stillness found in temple corridors at sunrise.

Begin in Siem Reap, gateway to the Angkor temples. At dawn, the towers of Angkor Wat reflect in still pools as the sky shifts gently from violet to gold. Nearby, the roots of giant trees curl around the walls of Ta Prohm and intricate carvings at Bayon gaze out with serene half smiles. Between explorations you return to shaded pools and contemporary resorts, where the stories of the temples linger in the evening air.

Travel onward to Phnom Penh, a capital overlooking the confluence of rivers. Here French era boulevards, traditional markets and riverside cafés sit alongside palaces and pagodas. The city also holds spaces of remembrance and reflection that help travellers understand Cambodia’s recent history with depth and care.

Along the coast and in the countryside, life moves at a slower pace. Kampot and Kep offer crumbling French villas, pepper plantations and quiet coastal views. Floating villages on the Tonle Sap and community-based projects in rural areas give insight into everyday life beyond the cities.

Cambodia is a journey into sacred spaces and gentle encounters. It invites travellers to approach with curiosity and to leave with a deeper sense of connection.

Good to Know

The Angkor Archaeological Park covers a much wider area than many travellers expect, with numerous smaller temples and reservoirs set amid forests and rural villages. Traditional Cambodian dance and music carry stories from myth and history and can often be experienced in intimate performances rather than only large stages. Tonle Sap lake reverses its flow seasonally as the Mekong floods, creating one of the most fascinating hydrological systems in the region. Many social enterprises in Cambodia combine dining, crafts or tours with training and support for local youth and communities, allowing travel to contribute directly to positive change.

Best Time to Visit

The most pleasant time to visit Cambodia is generally from November through March when the air feels drier, temperatures are comfortable and skies are often clear. This is an ideal season for temple touring, river boat trips and gentle walks in the countryside.

From April to May temperatures rise and can feel quite humid, especially around midday. The green season from May to October brings afternoon showers that refresh the landscapes and fill the rice paddies, with fewer visitors at many sites. A lesser-known advantage of the green season is the way cloud formations and softer light transform the temples and countryside for photography.

What to eat

Cambodian cuisine is delicate, aromatic and quietly complex. Known locally as Khmer food, it draws on rice, freshwater fish, herbs, coconut, lime and subtle spice combinations. Signature dishes include amok, a gently steamed fish curry with coconut and lemongrass, fragrant soups, grilled meats with lime and pepper and crunchy salads layered with herbs and roasted rice.

Tonle Sap and Mekong fish appear in many recipes, while Kampot pepper is prized for its floral warmth. Street stalls and family run restaurants offer simple yet memorable meals, and meals are often shared, making dining a communal experience.
