Paradise Islands of the Indian Ocean

When Europeans first landed on the shores of these islands while en route to the East Indies, they found what might be deemed paradise: verdant islands surrounded by warm turquoise waters and brimming with endemic wildlife including abundant giant tortoises and a myriad of birds previously unknown to the outside world. Within a few short years, that paradise had been significantly altered, with casualties including the famous Dodo, gone forever. Nonetheless, many of the endemic species survived, and with strident conservation efforts since the 20th century, have begun to recover.

On this inaugural tour, we’ll visit three important areas of interest in this region; all beautiful and having in common a French colonial heritage but each differing in its natural history. Through a variety of land and water-based excursions, we’ll visit larger and smaller islands in pursuit of a variety of discoveries and appreciate what makes this region special! In an important sense, these islands share a similar story of evolution with the faraway Galapagos Islands. Endemic birds are often more obvious residents, but a closer look reveals an array of endemic reptiles and plants as well!

This tour is a unique opportunity to marvel at the intrinsic beauty of these mystical islands, to visit their unique habitats and landforms, and to see their endemic and ultra-rare wildlife and the efforts to preserve them. Visits to offshore islets will provide further context to evolution. We'll gain a retrospective view that takes us back in time to the 'Age of Exploration' and a forecast of good things to come. Join new Quest leader Patrick Moldowan for an insider’s view of nature and conservation on these paradise islands!
