Most Liveable Cities: Amsterdam & Rotterdam

Power of Pragmatic Planning

This trip to the Netherlands lets you explore the power of design, and how the Dutch are pragmatically finding ways to improve their country. We’ll spend time in and around Amsterdam and Rotterdam, where we’ll meet with provocative thinkers and designers. We’ll gain special insights as we walk the neighbourhoods and head off the beaten track to see a large number of exceptional initiatives and experimental projects, countering the lingering clichés of the Netherlands as a country of tulips and windmills.

We’ll experience how the country is totally designed, from its cityscapes to the new ‘artificial nature’. In Amsterdam we will take walking tours in the ‘new metropolis’, meet the author of a book about the Dutch and water, tour the Eastern Harbour area with a municipal planner, and visit the new community of Almere surrounded by ‘new nature.’ In Rotterdam, we’ll meet with architects responsible for a public park managed by citizens, visit innovative art institutions, and explore places of urban renewal on foot. We’ll enjoy wonderful meals in Hans’ favourite restaurants and visit his carefully selected and most interesting urban spaces.

Throughout this in-depth and stimulating urban experience, explore both what we can see, hear, taste and feel, but also the less visible but critical elements of creativity that make these two cities so exciting!
