Morocco with the Winnipeg Art Gallery

You are invited to join Sherry and Bill Glanville on this exciting Winnipeg Art Gallery trip to Morocco.

Morocco is a fascinatingly diverse country to explore, from the rugged Atlantic coastline to the peaks of the Atlas Mountains, from sweeping deserts to narrow alleyways of ancient souqs.

On this trip, we’ll visit many of Morocco’s UNESCO World Heritage sites. We’ll see the two-thousand-year-old ruins of Volubilis, once the outer edge of the Roman Empire and contrast that with the Spanish-Moorish-style city of Meknes. We’ll soak in the lost-in-time ambience of Fez’s medina - a labyrinth of lanes and covered bazaars bursting with aromatic food stalls, artisan workshops, and ancient buildings hiding treasures behind colourfully painted doors. We’ll even learn to prepare a mouth-watering tagine.

Berber culture remains strongest in the desert and in the Atlas Mountains. We’ll explore the dunes of the Sahara, riding a camel (or a jeep) out into the desert to sleep under a million stars in a tented camp and spend two days hiking and walking in a spectacular landscape of peaks and oases in the Atlas Mountains.

In Marrakesh, we’ll watch the action in the Djemaa el-Fna Square and delve into the souq where gold, leather and fabrics are traded much as they have been for hundreds of years. Between our explorations, we’ll enjoy beautiful riad accommodation, relax on panoramic roof top terraces and taste the flavours of saffron, cinnamon, and mint.
