Mongolia with UBC's Julian Dierkes

One of the most profound experiences of travel in Mongolia is not a first impression, but rather a realization some time into your first cross-country drive: you haven’t seen a fence in many hours! Obviously, that happens in parts of Canada, but in Mongolia it happens in a wide-open landscape. Even though Mongolia’s population density of 1.8 people/km2 (roughly half of Canada’s) makes it among the least densely populated countries in the world, you will almost always see the white marshmallow puff of a distant ger (yurt in Mongolian) near the road or up a valley.

You will have departed on your drive from bustling Ulaanbaatar, a capital that has called nearly half of the country’s population and increasingly has all the features of any “modern” city around the world, including some nice outdoor dining and good beer. You will be driving toward sites of natural wonder, remnants of ancient and contemporary cultural practices, or stunning views. You will see free roaming herds everywhere and with a bit of luck, one will pass by your ger as you lie awake to see a starry sky through the gap in the roof. When you step outside, the scent of wormwood grass will be a smell that you will forever associate with your travels across the steppe.

Amid all these impressions, I will try to guide you in understanding contemporary Mongolia, what nomadism means today, how the country has been democratizing since 1990, where we might spot remnants of state socialism, and how an economy is developing rapidly through the exploitation of minerals.
