Havana: Capital of Creativity

Boris and Ann recently hosted a webinar about what drives Havana's creative pulse.

“As soon as you touch down in Havana you feel it: culture is as integral to Cuban life as the island’s rum. Whether it’s a hip-hop artist jamming on the street corner, piano strains floating from a first-floor ballet rehearsal room; colour-infused canvasses in a museum or street art on a barrio wall, self-expression is everywhere.” - Havana Cultura: Supporting and showcasing Cuban creativity.

Havana’s vibrant and inclusive arts scene ranges from dance to music to visual to performing arts and includes both world-class professionals to everyday folks on every street corner. Cuba’s robust tradition of visual arts – painting, sculpture, installations, photography, performance art and video – is receiving international acclaim for its innovative contemporary art. And everyone gets in the action. Imaginative graffiti art and amateur murals are found throughout Havana’s neighbourhoods.

You cannot stroll through the streets of Havana without hearing music from many genres. Cuban music has its principal roots in Spain and West Africa and has been immensely influential in other countries, contributing not only to the development of jazz and salsa, but also to Argentinian tango, Ghanaian high-life, West African Afrobeat, and Spanish “nuevo flamenco.”

Creativity is woven into the Cuban culture. The island has a style and vitality that’s all its own, and there is nowhere better experience it than in Havana. There is no better time than right now, when the arts are exploding. And no better guide than Boris Masip, Cuban born Art-lover, Dreamer, Amigo who will take us to visit some of Cuba’s best artists in their homes and studios.

We will want to ask these Cuban artists a lot of questions…
  • Why, in all of Caribbean and Central and South America, has Cuba become and remained a unique capital of creativity?
  • What role did Fidel Castro’s revolution play in the Cuban arts scene?
  • Will the temptations of the commercial market diminish the originality of Cuban art?
Audacious, contradictory, and beautiful – this is Havana!
