Fieldwork Philosophy in Kenya

Wild places and spaces have a unique appeal to us. Indeed, they beckon to us, call to us. What is it that draws us to such places? What is it that we seek there?

In the fall of 2019 we consider these questions as we witness the wildlife, marvel at the landscape and explore the culture of Kenya.

We’ll consider what leads us to the wild, reflect on our desire to wander in removed and remote spaces, and reflect on how our experiences of such places change us as we change them. Inspired by readings from naturalists, philosophers, explorers, and poets including Matthiessen, MacFarlane, Blixen, Dillard, Gallman, and Solnit, we will consider both the romance and the reality of the wild and explore what is known and unknowable about such places. There will be organized activities, discussions, writing and photography opportunities as well as time for personal reflection and discovery. We will explore the mystery and the wonder of the savannah and consider what it teaches us about the nature stewardship and our lives back home. Engaging in “fieldwork philosophy” we will develop a phenomenology, an understanding of the wild. We’ll journey inward, as we journey outward.

Witness wildlife
Marvel at the landscape
Explore the culture
And wonder at it all!

Join us in the fall of 2019 for a safari of a special kind.
