Escape to Los Llanos
Feb 21-26, 2022
6 days | Colombia | Tour Extensions
Eastern Colombia – also called Orinoquía - is a vast region home to a remarkable habitat: Los Llanos (pronounced “yanos”). Here we find an uncanny habitat of extensive tropical savannahs, with gallery forests lining permanent waterways. It is a region of extremes, where rainfall during the wet season effectively transforms vast areas into a huge grassy wetland. It is also a region of coexistence, where farms have been integrated into the natural landscapes and wildlife lives alongside humans. Birds are a conspicuous feature here, with more than seven hundred species recorded in the region, including signature species such as the Scarlet Ibis and Jabirú, among many other waders and waterbirds. We find much more of interest in the woodlands. The diversity also extends to the mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Capybaras congregate as do caimans. Giant Anteaters may stroll across the plains. Although it is never a guaranteed sighting, the elusive Jaguar resides here too and sightings have increased in recent times. On this exploratory extension, we’ll be staying in the Hato La Aurora Nature Reserve right in the heart of Los Llanos where we’ll enjoy being surrounded by its vast expanses and its wildlife. We visit during the dry season when wildlife tends to concentrate around reduced water sources. Join us to discover this gem that remains largely undiscovered by the outside world! Quest leader Josh Vandermeulen will accompany this extension with a minimum of 5 booked travellers.
