Bhutan & the Thimphu Festival

Get a front row seat for the Himalayas on this exceptional President’s Tour. Lewie began his professional career as a Himalayan mountain guide; his enthusiasm for this part of the world is palpable – as is his delight in sharing its spectacular attractions.

Set against the most inspiringly scenic backdrop in the world, this tour affords an insight into the unique people who inhabit this region. Begin in India’s iconic hill station of Darjeeling to explore the winding streets of the old bazaars, admire the colonial-era architecture, and enjoy a fine cup of tea.

Druk Yul or Land of the Thunder Dragon, as Bhutan is known to the rest of the world, is a mysterious country hidden away in the Eastern Himalayas. A limited number of people are allowed to visit each year and this has preserved the unique character of this fascinating Himalayan Kingdom.

We will focus on these centers of Buddhist influence, visiting several remote monasteries in an attempt to better understand a remarkable culture that flourishes in the shadow of the world’s highest mountain ranges. A highlight will be joining the Thimphu Tshechu, a fabulous festival of colour and drama with monks’ dances, archery festivals, and finery of all description.

Enjoy authentic and comfortable accommodation and a relaxed pace with longer than usual stays in the places of most interest.
