Private Journeys in Zambia

Home > Private Journey > Zambia
Though perhaps overshadowed by neighbouring Botswana and South Africa, Zambia is undeniably one of the continent’s best safari destinations. It is a country of mesmerising wilderness with an astonishing amount of wildlife. The birthplace of the walking safari, Zambia offers the opportunity to connect with Africa in an intimate and awe-inspiring way. The Zambezi River is considered one of Africa’s mightiest rivers and flows through Zambia, forming a good part of its southern border with Zimbabwe as well; this river is the source of Zambia’s very name, and is also the great river that tumbles into a famous gorge to form the famed Victoria Falls.

Good To Know

Zambia is widely considered the birthplace of the walking safari, a style of wildlife viewing pioneered in the 1950s by conservationist Norman Carr in South Luangwa National Park. Instead of observing animals from a vehicle, guests explore the bush on foot with highly trained guides and scouts, creating a more immersive, sensory experience that emphasizes tracking, ecology, and understanding animal behavior.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Zambia is during the dry season from May to October, when wildlife congregates around rivers and waterholes, making game viewing at its peak. Early in the season, landscapes are still green from the rains, while September and October offer the most dramatic sightings as conditions become hotter and drier.

What To Eat

Freshwater fish like tilapia is especially popular near lakes and rivers, while grilled meats and stews are widely enjoyed across the country. Peanut-based sauces, made from groundnuts, are a rich and nutty staple
