South Africa: The Best of the Cape

On this tour we'll discover the exceptional diversity and eclectic qualities of 'the Cape' of south Africa. We’ll take in its very best natural features as we travel from its southern reaches up into the famed Kalahari and back down again. We’ll visit during the austral spring when many plants such as the dazzling Proteas and bulb-bearing wildflowers will be in bloom, and bird breeding activity will be at its height.

We’ll begin in the imposing landscapes around Cape Town. Here we’ll be at the very heart of the fynbos, the distinctive shrubland habitat that defines the Cape Floristic Kingdom, which is the smallest of the world’s six such kingdoms. We can find a higher concentration of endemic plants here than anywhere else in the world. The plants and the habitats they create are striking and form a fine backdrop for the area’s great bird life.

From here we’ll work our way steadily northward along the west coast where vast areas should be awash in spring blossoms. We’ll have many opportunities for pictures and watch for some of the many peculiar birds including the Black Harrier and Blue Crane. Our first large mammal sightings will begin in this area, and could include the threatened Cape Mountain Zebra amidst swaths of bloom at West Coast National Park.

We’ll then continue into the Northern Cape and the Kalahari. Some areas may be cloaked in an ephemeral floral show depending on the rains. We’ll see a number of succulents such as tiny stone plants called Lithops and the imposing Quiver Tree. A treat will Kgalagadi National Park where we will find a variety of quintessentially African wildlife well adapted to the semi-desert environment, including the Kalahari’s famous black-maned African Lions.

On our return to the south, we will take some time to enjoy some of the Cape’s wines and round off our tour with a visit to an African Penguin colony and a search for the endemic Cape Rock-jumper. if you enjoy sweeping landscapes and the chance to see peculiar and endemic wildlife, consider joining us on this fabulous tour!

Justin penned a blog article about zebras, including the Cape Mountain Zebra that we should see on this tour.
