Highlights of Southern Peru

The Andes, the Amazon and the Coast

Peru is one of the world’s mega-diverse countries in terms of biodiversity. We’ll discover some of this diversity as we visit Peru’s coastal areas, its luxuriant Amazon basin in the interior, as
well as the Andean highlands running through its centre.

We’ll begin in the Lima area as we discover interesting nooks in the desert environment. Along
the coast at Lomas de Lachay we’ll explore an unusual landscape of lushly vegetated hillsides
nestled in the desert.

Going from the coast to the Amazon will be like visiting another world. We’ll stay at a world-class
rainforest lodge nestled in the renowned Tambopata Reserve. Through walks, boat rides, and canopy
tower watches, we’ll enjoy a wide range of discoveries. We could observe Spectacled Caiman, six species of monkey, many parrot species and an astonishing abundance of other
birds, amphibians, and butterflies, not to mention the flora.

We’ll then move up into the Andes and the Sacred Valley where we’ll meet the Incas’ descend
ants still living among the mountains of their ancestors, and we’ll enjoy a number of excursion
s to habitats with their own particular bird life and flora. Here and elsewhere we will visit a select
number of carefully chosen cultural sites that showcase the intrinsic interest of this rugged
landscape. Among such visits will be the fabled lost city of Machu Picchu, where we’ll wander
amongst the enigmatic stone ruins.

*To complement your experience, consider our exciting post-trip extension to the ethereal Salar de Uyuni in next-door Bolivia. Volcanoes, geysers, flamingos, wild Vicuñas, two flamingo species, Andean Fox, and red and green lagoons inhabit the otherworldly landscapes of the vast salt flats.
