Russell Markel

Russell Markel has spent his life and career as a marine ecologist and mariner studying and sailing the BC coast. During his PhD in the Department of Zoology at UBC, and as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (UBC), Russell focused his research on the relationship between changing ocean climate and marine fish population dynamics, the effects of overfishing, and the design of marine protected areas.

Current Projects

Russell has spent his life and career as a marine ecologist and mariner studying, exploring, and sailing the BC coast. Most recently, Russell worked as a captain and expedition leader aboard the vessels Island Roamer and Island Odyssey throughout BC and southeast Alaska.

Memorable Moment

As a mariner, Russell’s career has included everything from teaching sailing and yacht deliveries to commercial research vessels and search and rescue missions aboard Canadian Coast Guard fast-response craft and 47’ motor lifeboats.
