Wild Labrador & the Torngat Mountains

The Labrador Coast represents one of the finest extents of wild coastline in Canada. This voyage of discovery allows us to experience this grandeur as we transit from temperate Cape Breton Island en route to the Arctic climes of Baffin Island. Along the way, we’ll visit a known Viking settlement, several remote mission locations and isolated fishing ports. We’ll see an evolving landscape as the geology, vegetation and wildlife change before us! And the wildlife along our route will keep us in anticipation. We might find both the Black Bear and Polar Bear, various seals and whales, and many land and marine bird species.

A particular highlight of our voyage is a visit to Torngat Mountains National Park – home to the highest mountains in Canada, east of the Rockies. This really is one of the jewels in the crown of the Canadian National Park network! It is home to Canada’s highest mountains east of the Rockies and features breathtaking fjords, remnant glacial systems, and stunning landscapes. The rocky walls of nearby Nachvak Fjord soar almost 900 metres above us as we sail up, on the lookout for Minke whales.

Our expedition vessel is the perfect platform for exploring the remote bays and fjords of this spectacular wilderness as many locations can only be accessed by ship. A final highlight awaits us as we venture across Frobisher Bay to Monumental Island. This is small-ship wilderness expedition cruising at its best!

As with all our expeditions, safety is our top priority. For that reason weather and sea conditions may require us to change our itinerary and shore excursions as we go, but that is half the fun of small ship expedition cruising.

Ship Information

Designed for polar research, the Akademik Sergei Vavilov is modern, comfortable, safe and ice-strengthened. Built as a scientific research vessel in Finland, the One Ocean Voyager is very stable, quiet and comfortable. Refitting and refurbishment over the last two years oriented towards her role as an expedition cruise vessel has greatly improved the comfort and calibre of the facilities aboard the ship. There is little if any ambient noise from engines or machinery and with most of the public spaces on a separate deck from the majority of the cabins there is little issue with passenger-generated noise. Vessel stabilization is gained through a combination of internal stabilizers and a built-in ballast trimming system. The rapid transfer of ballast between special trimming tanks reduces vessel motion and coupled with a modern hull design gives us a stable platform for science and exploration.
