Trinidad & Tobago: A Tropical Birding Hotspot

A visit to Trinidad and Tobago serves as an excellent and relaxed introduction to tropical birding! These two verdant islands surrounded by aquamarine-coloured waters are a veritable 'hot spot' for bird life, and also contain a rich diversity of tropical flora and fauna. The world-renowned Asa Wright Nature Centre is our Trinidad base. It is alive with birds and, if you are a first-time visitor to this part of the world, you might see 20-30 new birds before breakfast! We will make day-trips from the Centre to see the famous Scarlet Ibis arrive at their evening roost at Caroni Swamp and travel from the lowlands to the mountains on the lookout for Ruby-topaz Hummingbird and Moriche Oriole. We will also seek out the cryptic, nocturnal Oilbird. We will then fly to Tobago to enjoy good swimming and snorkelling in the warm Caribbean waters and take a boat trip to the seabird island of Little Tobago where we’ll watch elegant Red-billed Tropicbirds fly along the cliff faces and Brown Boobies skim the water below. The pace of this trip will be relaxed, as we will use but two accommodations during our entire time.
