Baffin Island: Jewel of the High Arctic

This exploratory journey will cover the entire east coast of Baffin Island and Lancaster Sound.  Beginning in Iqaluit and sailing across the Arctic Circle up to Resolute, we will visit wildlife hotspots in search of beluga, bowhead and the elusive narwhal, as well as walrus and polar bear, the icon of the High Arctic. Spectacularly wild and rugged scenery, deep fjords and ice-choked waterways are combined with Inuit culture and unique access to two of Canada's Arctic national parks - Auyuittuq and Sirmilik (North Baffin) - secured through One Ocean Expeditions' close partnership with Parks Canada. Flights departing Ottawa, returning Edmonton.

As with all our expeditions, safety is our top priority. For that reason weather, ice or other conditions may require us to change our itinerary and shore excursions as we go but that is half the fun of Polar exploring. Predictability is a word that has no relevance in this environment.

Ship Information

The M/V Akademik Sergey Vavilov is a Russian-flagged vessel built in 1989 in Finland and designed as a scientific research vessel. She is 117 metres long and travels at a maximum speed of 14.5 knots. She carries 92 passengers and 63 crew. An extremely experienced captain and crew and an ice-strengthened hull provides an exceptionally safe combination for expedition cruising. She has undergone extensive refitting and refurbishment over the last five years oriented towards her role as an expedition cruise vessel. This small number of passengers, matched with 10 Zodiacs and an equal number of experienced expedition staff, means that excursions are in depth and up close.
