Antarctica, the Falklands & South Georgia Safari

Dubbed the ‘Best Wildlife Journey on the Planet’, this incredible 19-day trip on board the M/V Akademik Ioffe is our most extensive Antarctic wildlife expedition and has been planned so as to bring us to all of the region’s key natural history hotspots at the height of the southern hemispheric spring at the commencement of the breeding cycle for many species. As we cruise, we will note a surprising diversity and remarkable abundance of wildlife and have the opportunity to experience fascinating breeding behaviours of both birds and mammals up close. And the settings will provide a stark and impressive backdrop.

Our first stop will be the Falkland Islands, which are host to a profusion of birds ranging from the Black-browed Albatross and Rockhopper Penguins in their teeming colonies, to Imperial Shags, Magellanic Oystercatchers, Upland Geese and the flightless Falkland Steamer Duck. Moving on to the remote, rugged and hauntingly beautiful island of South Georgia with its glacier-covered mountains, we will see one of the largest bird colonies in the world, as a huge expanse of King Penguins, numbering an estimated 100,000 breeding pairs, stretch before us as far as the eye can see. Scenes of male Southern Elephant Seals battling for control of the beaches (and the female harems), and the intimate and beautiful Black-browed Albatross, will have you believing you are ‘on the set’ of your very own wildlife documentary! We will eventually arrive to the Frozen Continent where we will note its unique complement of wildlife. Besides birds, we will of course be on constant watch for the many mammals that are found in the region. Of the seals, we should see such species as the Antarctic Fur Seal, Crabeater Seal, and the gargantuan Leopard Seal. And we also expect to encounter whales and dolphins. The ice and snow conditions at this time of year will be pristine.

Whether it’s the sight of a gentle Humpback Whale dining on Antarctic Krill, the braying of Magellanic Penguins or the scene of immense glaciers, this trip will be a source of great memories and satisfaction for the wildlife enthusiast.
