Spain in Spring

There is no country in the Mediterranean that offers such a wealth of stunning scenery, diverse natural habitats, ancient hilltop villages and superb bird watching as Spain. For two weeks, we’ll travel the entire length of this sun-drenched land, from a vantage point near Gibraltar where the Moroccan coastline is only fourteen kilometres away, across the vast open plains of Extremadura where Great Bustards still gather and Spanish Imperial Eagles soar overhead, to the lofty heights of the Pyrenees Mountains.

We’ll visit some of Spain’s renowned nature reserves at a time when Europe’s bird activity is in full swing and the wildflowers are painting the countryside in colourful hues. We will stop at a raptor migration viewpoint to see dozens, and possibly hundreds of raptors as they cross the Strait of Gibraltar to the Spanish coast. We’ll see Greater Flamingos and a variety of waterfowl and waders at Coto Doñana. We’ll also explore the Belén Steppes, Monfragüe National Park and Pyrenean alpine habitats, stronghold of the peculiar Wallcreeper.

In addition to these nature highlights, we will see some magnificent fortified villages and towns and their cathedrals, churches, and castles. Past travellers have rated the birding on this trip as ‘awesome’.
