Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

This expedition off the west coast of Vancouver Island is dedicated to exploring and experiencing the wildlife, wilderness, and rich cultural heritage of Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands. The more than three hundred islands and islets constituting this archipelago are the jewel of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. During our expedition we’ll explore remote islands, beaches, estuaries, old-growth rainforests, kelp forests and intertidal communities. Every day you will observe and photograph the abundant coastal wildlife, including whales, eagles, bears, seabirds, seals, sea lions, and Sea Otters. The coastal waters here are exceptionally productive! Black Bears feed on shellfish at low tide, ravens drop clams from the sky, Gray Whales sift the shallows for tube worms, and Orcas patrol kelp forests for salmon and seals.

The abundant marine resources and the unique geography of this region have also supported indigenous populations and maritime cultures for millennia. Today the Nuu-chah-nulth people (meaning “all along the mountains and sea”) comprise 14 nations living along the west coast of Vancouver Island. As we travel through Barkley Sound we will visit the traditional territories of the Huu-ay-aht, Tseshaht, Uchucklesaht, Toquaht, and Ucluelet Nations. We will learn about the Nuu-chah-nulth expression “Hishuk ish Tsawalk”, meaning “everything is one and all is interconnected”.

On this expedition you will enjoy exceptional accommodation on board the Passing Cloud, a classic 70’ wooden schooner designed by William James Roué, famous for designing the legendary schooner Bluenose. It will be the perfect vessel for this journey of discovery!
