Music in the Golden State

California is known as the “Golden State” and this week of spectacular music and exploration in both Los Angeles and San Francisco will be truly golden. Our music tour begins in the south, in Los Angeles, with concerts in two of the city’s great concert halls – the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the world-renowned Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. As well as Puccini’s Tosca starring Sondra Radvanovsky, often billed as “the finest Tosca of our time”, with the Los Angeles Opera and an all-Wagner evening with the famed Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, we will also experience a vibrant folk-inspired concert typical of the cultural diversity of L.A. featuring Ukrainian and Bulgarian groups on tour. Journalists have claimed that these ensembles have “proven their vitality and uniqueness” with concerts that “create natural order amid the world’s chaos and absurdity.”

After L. A., we’re off to northern California and “the city by the bay” – beautiful San Francisco, where more than one heart has been left behind. Our musical and cultural experiences here include a fully staged modern day premiere of Rameau’s Le Temple de la Gloire, a co-production of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley. We will also see the touching fairy-tale ballet Cinderella by Prokofiev with the San Francisco Ballet. Both concerts will be in San Francisco’s stately War Memorial Performing Arts Center, built in the 1930s as the first municipally owned opera house in the U.S., and one of the last examples of the Beaux Arts style of architecture in the country.

Visits to leading galleries and museums including the Norton Simon Museum, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Asian Art Museum round out this exciting tour.

It will be my pleasure to be your personal host and guide for this fascinating and rewarding springtime tour to California, featuring a wide range of memorable activities and marvelous concerts that will not soon be forgotten! – Rick Phillips
