Fogo Island & St. John’s with U of T

This tour is sold out! Waitlist only.

Celebrate Canada’s 150th in Newfoundland. Find out what’s going on in St. John’s and on Fogo Island; the spectacular scenery, the daring architecture, and the way of life on the edge of the earth.

Start in St. John’s, the oldest city in North America, with its jellybean-coloured houses and vibrant food and music scene. It’s a city full of character with a contemporary edge. Meet with Memorial University Professor Sean Cadigan for a presentation on the big issues facing Newfoundland and Labrador. Enjoy a “scoff and a scuff” – a meal followed by dancing and traditional music.

Then enjoy four nights at the multi-award-winning Fogo Island Inn, a traditional yet contemporary masterpiece of modern architecture and design. Fogo Island Inn sits on an island, off an island, off of one of the four corners of the Earth. Every one of the 29 one-of-a-kind guest suites has dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet. The Inn is a community asset, and 100% of operating surpluses are reinvested into the community. Meet with one of the founders of the Shorefast Foundationon Fogo Island, practicing a new model for economic and cultural resilience that may hold learnings for small communities everywhere.

Wake up to the dramatic interplay of sea and sky, hike or cycle to explore the beautiful coastal scenery, enjoy meals featuring locally sourced produce, fish, and game, listen to the lilt of local music, and gaze at a million stars from the rooftop. Experience an authentic centuries-old culture. September is berry season; pick some of the 20 varieties of wild berries, walk to Eastern Tickle, forage for beautiful wild mushrooms, and spot caribou as they wander the island.

Join fellow University of Toronto alumni and friends for this exclusive trip to the edge of the earth.
