Ethiopia: Bone-breakers, Bleeding Hearts & More

We are thrilled to be visiting this ancient country that promises a rich and eye-opening experience. Bisected by the legendary Great Rift Valley, Ethiopia’s topography is varied and host to a multitude of habitats from lush forest through mountaintop, desert and savannas too. Our tour will be an opportunity for adventurous souls to visit these stunning habitats and experience the enchanting flora and fauna that call it home.

There will be many rare or highly localized mammals and birds here as we’ll discover by venturing from one side of the Great Rift Valley to the other. At the monastery of Debre Libanos, we’ll see the endemic and striking Gelada Baboons, the males of which evince their “bleeding heart” chest patch while at rest. We’ll also look for raptors overhead including the Bearded Vulture as it drops bones from the sky.

In the Bale Mountains, we’ll be treated to views of the endemic Ethiopian Wolf. Subsisting largely on a diet of the peculiar Giant Mole-rat, this is a very rare creature indeed with a handful of populations remaining. We’ll have an opportunity to see sunbirds, turacos, and trogons, many raptors and other birds throughout, including several endemic species in every habitat. We’ll be visiting in the Ethiopian spring when plant life is at its most opulent and many wildflowers will be in bloom, providing wonderful photographic opportunities. The imposing Giant Lobelias of the Sanetti Plateau will be a particularly memorable sight.

We invite our Quest travellers to join us on our inaugural tour of this nation of fantastic wild spaces with warm and welcoming people. This tour will particularly interest those who have visited Africa before and who would like to return to experience another dimension of this great continent.

*To complement your nature explorations, we are offering a post-trip extension featuring the cultural highlights of the north including the stunning rock-cut churches of Lali Bela. Please enquire for more information.
