Cuba's East

We have been introducing Quest tour participants to the beautiful island of Cuba for over 28 years and and some have enjoyed it so much, they have returned with us two and three times! Nobody knows the island as well as we do and we would like to introduce you to a very well-kept secret: Eastern Cuba. Far from the hustle and bustle of Havana and the silky sand of the north shore beaches is a land of verdant mountains, rich swamplands, subtropical rainforests and secluded beaches off the beaten path of mass tourism. We will explore these mountains and enjoy the beaches without the crowds.

Among the highlights will be our visit to Alejandro von Humboldt National Park, a biodiversity hotbed of international significance, replete with a wealth of endemic plant life. We’ll see the famous El Yunque mountain, described in the accounts of one Christopher Columbus. We will discover the East’s great variety of habitats from sub-tropical mountainsides with its tall pine forests, and lush ferny undergrowth, mountain rainforests and cool temperate zones. Giant ferns and delicate orchids thrive in one area, and succulent cacti thrive in another. We will see some of Cuba’s endemic birds along with our familiar North American breeding warblers and other birds wintering among the tropical forest trees. As we walk along forested mountain trails we’ll also look for some of Cuba’s endemic herptiles, rare plants, exotic fruits and variety of trees, and mammals too.

We’ll take a bit of time to visit vibrant Santiago de Cuba, the oldest colonial city in Cuba and once its capital. It was here that Fidel Castro started the Cuban Revolution and the city reflects the sense of history that this entails. One of the oldest forts in the Caribbean still stands guard over the entrance to Santiago de Cuba Harbour.

Cuba is an island of surprises with wonderful views around every turn in the road. The people are proud of their accomplishments and are anxious to show off their island to us.
